Reducing clinical visits during COVID-19 with secure video transfers for epilepsy management

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the development of a video transfer system for the diagnosis of seizures, researchers reported at the AES 2020 virtual conference.

“Video is a key diagnostic tool in paroxysmal disorders and epilepsy,” according to Dr Sameer Zuberi of the Royal Hospital for Children Glasgow, UK. However, patients often share recordings by unsecured methods, and clinics may lack systems to receive and archive patient videos.

Therefore, Dr Zuberi and colleagues developed a secure, web-based platform where patients and carers can upload videos of paroxysmal events. Clinicians can review a video, classify the event (epileptic, non-epileptic, or unknown), and determine whether a clinical visit is necessary.
