Multimodal neuroimaging improves definition of the epileptogenic zone in patients with epilepsy

A multimodal approach to neuroimaging may help to better define the epileptogenic zone (EZ) in patients with epilepsy, researchers say.

According to researchers at the Beijing Institute of Brain Disorders, China, surgical removal of the EZ is often the best treatment option to eliminate seizures in patients with epilepsy, making accurate definition of the EZ with neuroimaging critical.

New techniques have been developed to better define the EZ, including PET-MRI, MRI with fluid and white matter suppression (FLAWS), and post-processing to detect high frequency oscillations (HFO).
