New associations between COVID-19 infection and seizures were reported in the Emerging Science session at AAN 2021.
Dr Hardik Bhaskar and Dr Neeraj Singh from Northwell Health, New York, USA, presented findings from a retrospective analysis of data on 917 people admitted to 13 hospitals who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 and received a standard antiepileptic medication between 14 Feb and 14 June 2020.
The patients were divided into four groups: those with a history of epilepsy presenting with and without breakthrough seizures, and those without a history of epilepsy presenting with and without new-onset seizures.
